Luis Melgar Delgado, 38, of Hyattsville has been convicted by a Prince George's County jury for felony counts of sexual abuse of a minor and third-degree sexual offense and will now face prison time, the Prince George's County State's Attorney announced on Tuesday, Dec. 6.
According to a spokesperson for the state's attorney's office, on Sept. 14, 2021, a patrol officer from the Prince George's County Police was notified that a 14-year-old student wrote a note that was received by school officials alleging abuse by the stepfather, later identified as Delgado.
Following the note, officials say that a social worker at the Child Advocacy Center interviewed the teen, where it was disclosed that Delgado had sexually abused his victim by fondling and performing other sex acts inside the family’s home, leading to his apprehension and subsequent conviction.
“It is horrible that a child had to endure this abuse,” Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy stated. “I am truly thankful that we were able to get justice for the victim in this case and that the victim bravely testified against the abuser.
“Let me also say that cases involving abuse of children are never easy to prosecute.”
Delgado is scheduled to be sentenced on Friday, Dec. 9.
